FAQs

The plant where Bakuchiol comes from, the Psoralea corylifolia, is endemic to certain Asian countries such as India Himalayan regions of Pakistan and China. It is a wild species that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

Psoralea corylifolia is a wild leguminous plant that grows from 60-100 cm and takes 7 to 8 months to reach maturity.

The seeds that contain Bakuchiol are wild harvested between December and January.

Yes, Bakuchiol is natural. It is obtained from the babchi seeds found in the Psoralea corylifolia plant through a monomolecular extraction, which means we extract only one molecule, over 99% of Bakuchiol.

Babchi is the traditional name of the seeds of the plant Psoralea corylifolia. Babchi oil is not pure Bakuchiol! Our laboratory measured between 1.6% and 12.1% Bakuchiol content in babchi oils sold through e-commerce platforms. But more importantly, without proper purification, babchi oil naturally contains psoralens, photomutagenic and photocarcinogenic compounds that can be harmful for the skin. We do not recommend the use of babchi oils for cosmetic purposes.

Bakuchiol is an active ingredient that's not meant to be used on the skin in its pure form. However, you can find Bakuchiol in finished products. If you have any doubts whether the product contains Bakuchiol or not, feel free to contact us.

Yes, Bakuchiol is vegan. It is obtained through a vegetable source that does not contain any animal-based raw material.

Bakuchiol is obtained from the plant, Psoralea corylifolia, that grows in India and Himalayan regions of Pakistan and China.

In a 2019 safety assessment taking into account all toxicological data available, a finished product containing 1% Bakuchiol with over 99% purity has been considered safe for topical application on the face.

Traditionally, Bakuchiol is pronounced “buh-koo-chee-all."

Bakuchiol is a retinol-alternative. It stimulates key anti-aging genes like retinoid binding and metabolizing genes. It is also an antioxidant, a stimulator of collagens and an inhibitor of lipo-peroxidation.

Bakuchiol is not retinol nor a retinoid compound because the chemical structure is different. However, it is considered a retinol-alternative as it functions like retinol without the drawbacks. Bakuchiol can be used during the day and is better tolerated by the skin.

Clinical studies have shown that Bakuchiol significantly reduces hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. In particular, in the 2018 publication of the British Journal of Dermatolgy, the University of California concluded that Bakuchiol is comparable with retinol in reducing photoaging but it is better tolerated by the skin.

Bakuchiol helps to reduce inflammation, control the overpopulation of bacteria, maintain the integrity of the sebum and reduces hyperkeratinization. Clinical studies have shown Bakuchiol is more efficient than salicylic acid in reducing acne.

A product formulated with 1% Bakuchiol can be used on the face twice a day.

No, Bakuchiol is photostable, so it can be used during the day.

There is no data on reproductive and developmental effects, so using Bakuchiol is not recommended for pregnant women.

Bakuchiol is extracted from babchi seeds. Therefore, the pure raw material is a yellow to yellowish brown liquid.

No, Psoralea corylifolia is not an endangered species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.

The IUCN Red List is the worldwide authority on the conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species. As the oldest and largest global conservation organization, the IUCN partners with over 1,200 government and non-governmental members to seek protection for natural resources at local, regional and global levels. Governments often rely on the IUCN to help make important decisions related to biodiversity conservation.

Babchi, Bakuchiol, or Psoralea corylifolia (also known as Cullen corylifolium) is NOT on the IUCN Red List on plants threatened, endangered or to watch.
