The need to prevent skin from photo-damage caused by UV exposure is well-understood. However, the most effective way to achieve this is not. In a two-part series, published in the April and July 2018 issues of Cosmetics & Toiletries, Sytheon shared new learning that will assist cosmetic scientists in their quest to develop safer and more effective sunscreens for the US market.
Specifically, Synoxyl® HSS is a patented novel photostabilizer for Avobenzone and SPF booster that tested superior to key competitive benchmarks. Especially important, considering all the on-going safety and environmental concerns surrounding Octocrylene, Octinoxate and Oxybenzone, is the superior safety and biodegradability profile of Synoxyl® HSS.
The conclusions, drawn from in-vitro photostability and in-vivo SPF data, are that Synoxyl® HSS provides safe, eco-friendly and broad-spectrum skin protection (SPF 50+) when formulated into sunscreen sprays and emulsions [Chaudhuri, Ollengi, Singh & Martincigh, 3-(3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzilidene)-2,4-pentanedione: Design of a novel photostabilizer with in-vivo SPF boosting properties and its use in developing broad-spectrum sunscreen formulations, Int’ J Cosmet Sci, 39:25-35, 2017].
Synoxyl® HSS reduces the upstream oxidative stress cascade, presumably via the NADPH Oxidase pathway. Finally, a significant synergistic boost (75%) to the in-vivo SPF was observed using Synoxyl® HSS (2.5%) with the globally approved UV absorbers Avobenzone (3%), HMS (10%) and OS (5%).
