Formulation Tips

2. In a side phase, weigh Synoxyl® HSS and the proper amount of solubilizer and mix until all solids are dissolved. Heating to 65-70C may be required.
3. Add side phase of solubilizer and Synoxyl® HSS to the main batch post-emulsion.
a. Higher shear may be required to fully disperse the Synoxyl® HSS solution in the main batch. In this case, add the solubilizer and Synoxyl® HSS phase to the main batch on the homogenizer.
4. If Synoxyl® HSS is being solubilized in oil-soluble ingredients, Synoxyl® HSS can be added directly into the heated oil phase of the batch.

| What is Synoxyl® HSS incompatible with? | Synoxyl® HSS is incompatible with sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and alumina coated inorganic sunscreens. It is also incompatible with non-coated zinc oxides. |
| Does Synoxyl® HSS color the product? | Synoxyl® HSS as a raw material is pale yellow in color. When dissolved in a solubilizer, the solution will be yellow, but it should not affect the color of an emulsion. Anhydrous products will appear pale yellow. |
| Is Synoxyl® HSS heat stable? | Yes! Synoxyl® HSS is heat stable and can be added directly to the oil phase as long as the proper solubilizer is also in the phase or it can be solubilized in a separate phase and added post-emulsion. |
| What range does the pH of the product containing Synoxyl® HSS need to be in? | Synoxyl® HSS needs to be formulated into products within the acidic pH range (below 6.5). Formulators should check the pH range acceptable for all other ingredients as well. For zinc oxide formulas, it is recommended to formulate as a W/O emulsion. |
| Can anything affect the color of the product containing Synoxyl® HSS? | Iron or copper ions can affect the color of a product with Synoxyl® HSS. These metals ions can be present in water and can also be produced by UV radiation. To avoid interaction with Synoxyl® HSS and metal ions, the following measures can be taken: • Add a chelating agent at 0.1-0.3% (Examples: EDTA, EDDS, Sodium Phytate) • Use airless and/or opaque packaging |
