Formulation Tips

  2. In a side phase, weight Synovea® HR and the proper amount of solubilizer and mix until all solids are dissolved. Slight heating may be required, but do not heat above 45-50°C.
  3. Add side phase of solubilizer and Synovea® HR to the main batch when it’s cooling down and is below 50°C.
    1. Higher shear may be required to fully disperse the Synovea® HR solution in the main batch. In this case, add the solubilizer and Synovea® HR phase to the main batch on the homogenizer.

Synovea® HR is an amphiphilic molecule meaning it is easy to solubilize in polar and non-polar solvents.

  1. Oil-soluble ingredients: hydrophobic emollient esters and other high polarity esters, Hydra Synol® DOI, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, and Synovea® EL.
  2. Water-soluble ingredients: Ethoxydiglycol, Butylene Glycol, non-ionic solubilizers, glycerol, and a wide range of glycols.

Because Synovea® HR is a phenolic compound, it is incompatible with sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. It is also incompatible with ethanol.

Synovea® HR as a raw material is white to off-white in color. When dissolved in a solubilizer, the solution will be a pale yellow, but it should not color the formula.

No, Synovea® HR is not heat stable and needs to be added to the formula below 50C.

Synovea® HR is a phenolic compound and needs to be formulated into products within the acidic pH range (below 6.5). Formulators should check the pH range acceptable for all other ingredients as well.

Iron or copper ions can affect the color of a product with Synovea® HR. These metals ions can be present in water and can also be produced by UV radiation.

To avoid interaction with Synovea® HR and metal ions, the following measures can be taken:

  • Add a chelating agent at 0.1-0.3% (Examples: EDTA, EDDS, Sodium Phytate)
  • Use airless and/or opaque packaging

Yes, Synovea® HR is photostable. However, opaque packaging is recommended for the final product.

Synovea® HR is a hygroscopic material and can form agglomerates if not stored properly. Synovea® HR should be stored in the original sealed container at +10 to +30°C. Avoid exposure to light, heat, and moisture. It remains stable for over three years.
