Synastol® TC (INCI: Terminalia Chebula Fruit Extract), derived from an extract of the superfruit Haritaki, has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for its healing and rejuvenating abilities. Sytheon is the first company to introduce a standardized extract of Terminalia Chebula fruits in cosmetics and, more recently, as a nutritional supplement.

Formulation Tips
- Synastol® TC is only soluble in water.
- For 0.5% of Synastol® TC: 5-3% water
- For 1% Synastol® TC: 5-6% water
- In a side phase, heat the water to 40-45°C. Add Synastol® TC into the warm water and mix until all solids are dissolved.
- Add side phase of water and Synastol® TC to the main batch when it’s cooling down and is below 50°C.
- Higher shear may be required to fully disperse the Synastol® TC solution in the main batch. In this case, add the water and Synastol® TC phase to the main batch on the homogenizer.

Because Synastol® TC is a phenolic compound, it is incompatible with sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide.
Synastol® TC as a raw material is a light green/brown in color and can color the formula. The level of color depends on the use level and application type.
- Creams/lotions that have a higher oil/wax phase will be pale yellow in color
- Serums and other water-based products will have a yellow/green color
- Color cosmetics are not affected by Synastol® TC’s color
No, Synastol® TC is not heat stable and needs to be added to the formula below 50°C.
Synastol® TC is a phenolic compound and needs to be formulated into products within the acidic pH range (below 6.5). Formulators should check the pH range acceptable for all other ingredients as well.
Iron or copper ions can affect the color of a product with Synastol® TC. These metals ions can be present in water and can also be produced by UV radiation.
To avoid interaction with Synastol® TC and metal ions, the following measures can be taken:
- Add a chelating agent at 0.1-0.3% (Examples: EDTA, EDDS, Sodium Phytate)
- Use airless and/or opaque packaging
As with every ingredient directly extracted from a fruit or plant, there will be a small percentage of insoluble material. However, it should not affect the final formula containing Synastol® TC. The amount of insoluble material varies from batch to batch.
Black particles could appear in the final product if the parameters listed in the above FAQ’s are not followed.
- Check to make sure the pH is in the acidic range (and all other ingredients are stable in the acidic range)
- Check to make sure there are no incompatible materials
- Check there is a chelating agent
- Check opaque and/or airless packaging is used
- Check the Synastol® TC/Water solution is being added below 50°C
Yes, Synastol® TC is photostable. However, opaque packaging is recommended for the final product.

Synastol® TC is a hygroscopic material and can form agglomerates if not stored properly. Synastol® TC should be stored in the original sealed container at +10 to +30°C. Avoid exposure to light, heat, and moisture. It remains stable for over three years.
Synastol® TC has a light characteristic smell that should not affect the final product.
