In the ever-evolving landscape of beauty and personal care, a new trend has taken center stage: the skinification of the scalp. This movement redefines how we approach hair care by recognizing the scalp as an extension of our skin that deserves the same meticulous attention and care.
The scalp is not just a base for our hair; it’s a living, breathing part of our skin that plays a crucial role in the overall health and appearance of our hair.
At Sytheon, we believe that embracing this trend is essential for anyone seeking healthier, more beautiful hair.
Understanding the Scalp as Skin
The concept of skinification involves treating the scalp with the same principles we apply to facial skincare. Just like the skin on your face, the scalp can experience dryness, oiliness, sensitivity, and irritation. These issues are often overlooked, but they can significantly impact the health of your hair. A healthy scalp is the foundation for strong, vibrant hair, while a neglected scalp can lead to issues like dandruff, hair thinning, and even hair loss.
The scalp is home to a rich network of sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and a microbiome that needs balance to function optimally. When we ignore scalp care, we disrupt this delicate balance, resulting in inflammation, clogged follicles, and poor hair growth. Treating the scalp with nourishing, targeted ingredients—just as we do with our skin—can support a healthy environment for hair to thrive.
The Data Behind the Trend
Consumer behavior is shifting as people become more educated about the connection between scalp health and hair quality. According to a recent report by Mintel, the global market for scalp care products has seen a significant increase, with growth expected to continue over the next several years. The report highlights that 21% of consumers now incorporate scalp-specific products into their hair care routines, indicating the growing awareness of scalp health.1
Additionally, a 2023 survey by Euromonitor International revealed that 35% of consumers consider scalp care to be as important as hair care, with 42% of respondents expressing interest in products specifically designed for scalp health.2
This shift is driven by a rising trend of wellness and self-care, where more and more consumers look for holistic solutions that address underlying issues rather than just surface-level symptoms.
The demand for scalp care products is also reflected in the market’s response, with a noticeable increase in the number of new product launches targeting scalp health. These products range from scalp serums and exfoliating treatments to hydrating masks and SPF-infused sprays.
Brands can respond to this demand by offering formulations with actives that cater to specific scalp concerns, from dryness and sensitivity to oiliness and anti pollution protection.
Three Benefits of Scalp Care
Integrating scalp-focused steps into your hair care routine offers key benefits, including:
1. Promotes Hair Growth
A well-nourished scalp provides the ideal environment for hair follicles to function properly. Ingredients that soothe irritation, balance oil production, and hydrate the scalp can help stimulate hair growth and reduce shedding.
2. Reduces Dandruff and Flakiness
Scalp health is directly linked to the presence of dandruff and flakiness. Incorporating treatments that address the scalp’s unique needs can alleviate these common issues and maintain a cleaner, healthier scalp.
3. Prevents Hair Thinning
A healthy scalp is essential for maintaining hair density. Scalp care products that improve circulation and strengthen hair follicles can help prevent hair thinning and breakage.
A healthy scalp contributes to overall hair health, which results in shinier, stronger hair. Addressing individual scalp concerns can improve the overall density and strength of hair.
Incorporating Scalp Care Into A Routine
The skinification of the scalp isn’t just a passing trend; it’s a necessary evolution in how we care for our hair. Incorporating scalp-focused products into a routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are formulas featuring Sytheon ingredients that promote healthy scalp and hair:
Scalp-Friendly Serum with Hydra Synol® DOI and Synovea® EL
Similarly to the skin on our face and body, common skin disorders such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis can materialize on the scalp. Emerging in the forms of flaking, dryness and itching, these disorders can decrease optimal scalp health and can cause consumers to feel uncomfortable with the appearance of their hair. It is important to focus on barrier issues on the scalp and the skin as they are the root cause of many skin disorders that consumers struggle with. Luckily, Sytheon has developed two key ingredients to address these concerns: Synovea® EL and Hydra Synol® DOI.
Synovea® EL is a lipid-soluble form of Linoleic Acid (LA), an essential fatty acid needed for skin nourishment. Synovea® EL is hydrolyzed into LA in the skin providing a more stable version alternative to Linoleic Acid while still getting all the same benefits. Maintaining skin barrier function and hydration allows Synovea® EL to be an important ingredient in any scalp product. In fact, one study has shown that Linoleic Acid reverses detergent-induced barrier damage, which can counteract the effects of shampoo on the scalp. Another important function of Synovea® EL to highlight is its ability to maintain stratum corneum acidity. For the skin barrier to function normally, lipids must be converted into free fatty acids, which can only be done in an acidic environment. While everyone has a different skin pH, the average is in the acidic range, around 5.5. Synovea® EL can be used in formulas to target pH balancing claims to regulate normal skin barrier function of the scalp.
Hydra Synol® DOI is a smart skin hydrator and barrier builder that intelligently provides optimum hydration based on skin moisture content/deficit. Hydra Synol® DOI has been clinically proven to maintain long-lasting hydration even after the regression period. Many products provide temporary relief for skin issues such as eczema and psoriasis, but Hydra Synol® DOI can provide a more long-term solution and can relieve the itching of the scalp. 2% Hydra Synol® DOI was tested against 2% Glycerol and proven to be 3X more effective at hydrating severely dry skin. However, a synergism was observed with a combination of 2% Hydra Synol® DOI and 2% Glycerol.
A perfect combination to maintain and build the scalp’s barrier and pH is 2% Hydra Synol® DOI, 2% Glycerol and 2% Synovea® EL. For the Scalp-Friendly Serum formulation, reach out to formulations@sytheonltd.com.
Three-Step Routine: Scalp Shampoo, Scalp Conditioner and Scalp Serum featuring Synasol® TC
Synastol® TC is a standardized and well-defined ingredient derived from the superfruit of the Terminalia Chebula tree, commonly known as Haritaki and has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. Synastol® TC is an All-in-One Blue-Light, Pollution Protection and Well-Aging Powerhouse and has been clinically proven to reduce oxidative and inflammatory stress caused by blue light and pollution, maintain barrier function, increase hydration and protect and build the ECM (extracellular matrix) in the skin. Each of these attributes can also have damaging effects on the scalp and hair. By introducing Synastol® TC into a hair care product line, barrier function and hydration on the scalp can be maintained, leading to a reduction of inflammation while also reducing oxidative stress that damages hair strands, especially in consumers with colored hair.
Starting the three-step routine by washing hair with the Scalp Shampoo can provide protection to hair strands from oxidative stress. Continuing with the Scalp Conditioner, which also features Synovea® EL and Hydra Synol® DOI, Synastol® TC can provide hydration to the hair and scalp, while Hydra Synol® DOI and Synovea® EL can help combat irritation on the scalp caused by common surfactants found in shampoos. Lastly, the Scalp Serum, which features the combination of Synastol® TC and Hydra Synol® DOI, can be applied post-wash to build the integrity of the ECM and maintain the function of the skin barrier as well as providing all-day protection against pollutants and UV rays. Other products that can incorporate Sytheon’s ingredients are hair masks, scalp exfoliators and SPF products for the scalp. As consumers understand the importance of SPF on the skin, it’s critical to protect the scalp from UV damage by wearing protective clothing, like a hat, or using a scalp-friendly sunscreen that includes antioxidants and moisturizing agents such as Synastol® TC, Hydra Synol® DOI and Synovea® EL.
