Isosorbide Dicaprylate (DOI) is a natural derivative of caprylic acid and isosorbide that provides optimum hydration based on skin’s moisture content or deficit. Commonly used in personal care formulations for its long-lasting hydration and barrier building properties.

Isosorbide Dicaprylate is derived from naturally occurring, plant-based materials through a green chemistry process.

Isosorbide Dicaprylate is a hydrator and barrier builder that addresses many personal care concerns, including:

• Triggering CD44, the key receptor of Hyaluronic acid
• Stimulating Aquaporin 3 protein, which is responsible for facilitating water and glycerol movement across cells
• Upregulates e-cadherin, responsible for maintaining the structural integrity, barrier function and wound healing capabilities of the skin, to provide homeostasis
• Stimulates ceramide synthase 3, key enzyme responsible for Ceramide boosting
• Recent research shows DOI has excellent anti-inflammatory activity working through TRPA1, TSLP (responsible for itch) & TRPV-3 pathways

Beyond its active ingredient properties, Isosorbide Dicaprylate provides a great skin feel and is an excellent solubilizer for UV filters and many lipophilic ingredients.

Yes! In fact, it’s recommended to formulate 2% Isosorbide Dicaprylate in combination with 2% glycerol to obtain synergistic skin hydration effects.

In addition, Isosorbide Dicaprylate is miscible in a wide variety of the following:

• Emollients such as caprylic/capric triglycerides, silicones, and C12-15 alkyl benzoates
• Vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, jojoba oil, olive oil
• DOI is also an excellent solubilizer (>25%) for sunscreens, like Avobenzone, Benzophenone-3, and actives such as Hexylresorcinol ((Synovea® HR)) etc.

Isosorbide Dicaprylate is considered suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, dry and problem skin.

Daily moisturizers, sun care products, self-tanners, skin lighteners, exfoliators, anti-aging lotions and color cosmetics can all be developed with Isosorbide Dicaprylate for normal and dry skin.

In clinical studies, participants generously applied lotion with 2% Hydra Synol® DOI (INCI: Isosorbide Dicaprylate) and 2% glycerol twice a day for two weeks. The effects were long-lasting with a four-day regression period.

In a 14-day study, Isosorbide Dicaprylate showed a 15% reduction in Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL), clinically validating its barrier function improvement.

Isosorbide Dicaprylate can also be used as a natural and biodegradable alternative to phenyltrimethicone to maximize hair shine. In fact, a study showed an improvement in hair shine and luster by +273% immediately after application. Hydra Synol® DOI is also biodegradable and ECOCERT-COSMOS natural. 

The suggested use level is 2 to 4% alone or in combination with 2% glycerol.
